GRANDMASTER ARK WONG 1900 - 1987Ark Yuey Wong was born on 1/11/1900 during the Boxer Rebellion . Those were turbulent times in China. Ark Y Wong had 3 teachers they were: lam Ark Kun Ho Yeng Monk Pang They all began Kung Fu before the Boxer Rebellion , Lam Ark Fun and Ho Yeng were village Kung Fu Masters and Monk Pang was the chief Monk of Canton . Ark Y Wong was also a Doctor of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. He was an excellent Doctor a specialist similar to a Internal Medical Specialist. He opened his first Kung Fu open to all races in 1960 in Chinatown Los Angeles California. He named it the Wah Que studio Wah Que he said meant Chinese-American. He opened his second school in Lincoln Heights in 1974. In this location he also remodeled the building and converted it into a Medical clinic and Kung Fu School. He also wrote 2 books and appeared in the Movie Kung Fu and Vice Squad. He was known as the father of the 5 Animal Styles of Kung Fu. He was extremely knowledgeable about Combat , self-defense and offense. Acting ( as he called it ) was another specialty of his along with exercises for health. The last of a dying breed a true Tradinoal legend. His knowledge was not passed down in its entirety. The first time we filmed him practicing Kung Fu was in the summer of 1959 - here is that video - youtu.be/oEGvu5QUAwEA

In the beginning we practiced anywhere and filmed in the parking lots in China Town. The locals use to watch us , they enjoyed it, it was unusual to see non Chinese practicing Kung Fu let alone in their back yard. We ( Jim and I ) became well known.
The first public appearance we made was in march 1964 --- we performed at the Hop Sing Tong -----
Black Belt Magazine put an article about Sifu ( Ark Wong 1965) and that opened the door and things changed , Few people had heard of Kung Fu and the martial arts community was curious. We were " bombarded " by new students. The adjustment Sifu had to make was to please all these high ranking people. Sifu use to complain saying " they want to start at the top and work their way down "
It cost them some big bucks and he took advantage of it. It was forms from then on without the knowledge of the use .

THE DEATH TOUCH
Sifu was well known for his ability with the Death Touch. Being a Doctor of Acupuncture and Internal Medicine he new the anatomy of the humane body well . He knew the spots ( Nerves ) he also knew which sections where more venerable in the Morning - Afternoon- Evening also with the seasons of the year.
Add his Kung Fu strength training he could penetrate the spots easily.
He never to my knowledge taught it in depth to anyone, " too dangerous " he said. Also it took many years to learn few if any one wanted to spend the required time to learn it .

THE CHAIN
Another thing of the past , in the early 60's he taught a few of us the chain , a real chain not a thin whip chain with an attachment's to make sound and aerobic flashy movements. It was reminiscent of the motor cycle gangs and the chains they used back in the early part of the 1900's.
he decided to stop as it was too dangerous.

Interesting to note: If Sifu didn't want to become involved in your conversation, he pretended he didn't speak or understand English. Sifu understood and spoke English very well. It all depended on how well you knew him.

CLOSED HAND STYLES AND ANIMAL STYLES
Choy Ga ---- Lee Ga --- Foot Ga --- Mote Ga --- Hung Ga ----
comprise the 5 Family Styles of Sifu's Kung Fu.
There are both Closed Hand Styles , Palm, and Animal Styles in Ark Wong's Kung Fu. In the first few years I concentrated on closed fist styles and the Palm ( ridge hand ) along with weapons.
The Animal Styles consist of the same 5 Family Styles.

The last several years of Ark Y Wong's life were good years for The good was the old Church he bought and converted in to his Medical Clinic. He had his Pharmacy, Hospital, living quarter's, Kung Fu training areas inside and out side, along with his training shed in the back of the building used to develop ones hands, kicks, etc we called it the " meat house".
He had pull curtains around beds, that was where he treated patients with Acupuncture. His examination room was also his " pharmacy " the room was filled with Herbs. His knowledge of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture was outstanding, one of the best ever.
The bad was the neighborhood, it is in a run down area of Los Angeles. Had he moved to Monterrey Park or the other direction his Kung Fu legacy would have turned out much better.
