Bruce Lee use to visited Sifu's school on Ord Street often. I met Bruce Lee at Sifu's a few times, He treated Sifu with the utmost respect. Bruce bought several Martial Arts books from Sifu, Bruce on occasions would watch some of Sifu's classes, he always remained quite and respectful . He became good friends with Dan Inosanto.
Dan studied from Sifu for a long time. He took private lessons and became very proficient with the Tiger. I saw Dan spar at Ed Parker's International in the Black Belt finals and he used the Tiger and used it well, sadly it didn't count because open hand strikes we not recognized .
James Wing Woo is an exellent Sifu , he always keep to himself as was the Chinese tradion back then , he was very instrumental in teaching non-Chinese Kung Fu , he was amng the first to do so.

January is a reminder of New Years each year and also a reminder of GM Ark Y Wong as he was born on 1/11/1900.
His traditional Kung Fu style has been changed by those that claim to know it and teach it.
The changes started back in 1965 after the first article about GM Ark Wong came out Black Belt in January 1965. The school was " invaded " by martial artist from all over, they came " out of the woodwork. This is when Sifu got his in-site into the martial arts outside his world.
He complained in the being to me a lot and use to say - "They want to learn too fast " " None of them will take the time to learn the way I did " . So he adapted and satisfied their desires.
My best to you Sifu.

As I see Kung Fu today , I notice the missing links to the past. It is indeed rare to see Traditional Kung Fu these days. Many people claim they teach Tradional Kung Fu however what they teach doesn't resemble the old ways.
Ark Y Wong was one of the last of a dying breed. He taught 100 % Tradinonal Kung Fu when I met him in 1959. In 1965 his school was " bombarded " by the American Martail Artists . He was disappointed with their attitude. He use to say " they want to start at the top " ----- " they don't want to learn the old way " ----- " they won't spent their time training the Horse stance " ----------- " they want to learn to fast " etc.
So he changed his method of teaching to suit the masses yet he remained himself . Through it all he taught me the same way he learned. It was and still is an honor to teach his Kung Fu.

PEOPLE TODAY SELDOM SPEAK OF ARK Y WONG'S MEDICAL ABILITY. IN THE USA HE IS BEST DEFINED AS AN INTERNAL MEDICINE SPECIALIST.
HE NOT ONLY DIAGNOSED AN ILLNESS PROPERLY HE TREATED IT AT THE SAME TIME. HE USED HERBAL MEDICATION OR ACCUPUNTURE. I HAVE PERSONAL WITNESSED HIM CURE MANY MEDICAL ISSES. FOR EXAMPLE I HAD A STUDENT A YOUNG MAN IN HIS EARLY 20'S , HE HAD HEMRORRHOIDS , HIS DOCTOR WANTED TO OPERATE ( CUT EM OUT ) WHICH DIDN'T APPEAL TO HIM. I TOOK HIM TO SIFU, SIFU MIXED HIM SOME HERBAL MEDICINE. AFTER SEVERAL TREATEMNTS BY SIFU THE HEMRORHOIDS WERE GONE AND NEVR CAME BACK, THEY DRIED OUT, BROKE UP, AND PASSED TROUGH HIS SYSTEM.
ANOTHER FRIEND HAD A PROTRATE PROBLEM, HE WAS PUT IN THE HOSPITAL AND GIVEN THE OLD LOOK SEE TEST RIGHT HIS it ALONG WITH A FEW DIFFERENT MEDICATIONS THAT DIDN'T WORK , RESULT THE SURGEON SET HIM UP AGAIN FOR THE SAME TEST , HE WENT TO SEE SIFU, AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF TREATMENT BY ARK WONG HE WAS CURED.
THERE ARE COUNTLESS EVENTS SUCH AS THIS.
SIFU'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY EXPLAINS WHY HE COULD PARALAYZE, NUMB , KNOCK OUT, OR KILL IN ONE MOVE, REFERRED TO AS " THE DEATH TOUCH " . HE PREERRED TO KEEP THIS KNOWLEDGE TO HIMSELF " TO DANGEROUS " HE USE TO SAY.
AN AMAZING MAN.

Ark Wong asked me and my wife to sell wigs for him. since my wife worked at a large Ins. co. she had a lot of women she could talk to and set up appointment to see the human hair wigs. We sold quite a few for Sifu Wong. He gave us a bonus for selling them. I had a small suitcase that was packed with different colors of hair. We all laughed about him wearing a black wig,he said it kept his head warm!.

When Sifu moved to Daily Street he bought an old Church and converted it to his likening. It was his Medical Clinic , complete with his examining room, pharmacy, Medical Supply area, Hospital type area with beds and draw curtains, it was a highlight in hid life. He also had his Kung Fu teaching area inside and a place out back I called the meat house. The meat house was used for strength conditioning.

OVERLOOKED
Most people overlook the fact that Sifu made his living from his Medical practice not from Kung Fu. He was an excellent Doctor, he was a Internal Medical Specialist. He was one of a Kind , kinda like a dying breed. He did it all , he examined you, provided you with treatment and Medical needs all on the same visit. He was right on the money all the time.
When he had his school on Ord Street , right around the corner he had his Medical Practice and his Import Export store. Everyone in Chinatown sought him out for his expertise in Chinese Medicine. When he moved to Daly street , he excelled in life, he bought an old Church and converted it into a Medical Clinic, draw curtains , Hospitals beds, everything. His own examining room , pharmacy , treatment area , sleeping ( recuperating ) area.
In addition he had a area for Kung Fu.

I had the pleasure of meeting Master Wong and he performed acupuncture on my knee at Daly St. I remember watching others doing the Salute and wondered why it looked different from what I had learned... It was a great kung fu environment and atmosphere.

I liked Bruce Lee , he was a very respectful fellow , really a likeable person, he treated Sifu really nice. He use to buy a lot of Books from Ark Wong, he also recruited Dan Inosanto from Sifu's place. He use to watch those evening classes at Sifu's. I always will cherish what Bruce said to the locals when they complained about him teaching non Chinese Kung Fu he said " we don't live in China this is the USA " . Jimmy Woo use to buy equipment form Sifu when he changed his appearance from Karate to Kung Fu. Sifu asked him to show him some of his Kung Fu forms - his response " I forgot them " Woo opened a school close to my home in west Covina ( early 70 ) I use to watch his classes , he never introduced me but he always let me watch. He taught a combination of Judo and Karate at that time. Never hear or saw anything of David , if any of them were taught anything from Sifu it was unknown to us. It was easier for them to have some of there students study from Sifu and learn from them which is what most of the other teachers ( school owners did ). By the time you went to Sifu's to had you knee worked on , things had changed - years before he moved to Daily Street , the original method had changed . In the beginning he use to try and keep it his way but as we got invaded he adjusted to what the people wanted , as they paid the big bucks to get their wishes.

Then I feel very fortunate to have learned Master Wong's original method from Gary. What books other than the yellow and blue books (which I have both and the yellow one signed by Master Wong) did he sell?
