You are Jay as Gary learned back in the 60's and he may well have been one of the last to learn some of Sifu's traditional Kung Fu.
Sifu sold Chinese Kung Fu books he bought from china some really old ones.
Bruce Lee got a lot of insight to Sifu's Kung Fu by watching his classes and from Dan Inosanto. Bruce had his own method of fighting and I believe he was very good at it.

CLOSED FIST HAND STYLES
Sifu put more emphasis teaching Animal styles than Closed Fist Styles around 1965 , after we were invaded by the Karate people , they wanted to learn the Animal Styles and Weapons. Open fingers = Broken Bones . Closed fist styles break bones.
I haven't ever seen Boat Style Kung Fu since Jim and I learned it , let alone any closed fist styles. Choy Ga - Lee Ga - Mote Ga - and Hung Ga are 100 % closed first - Fut Ga is the Palm and Ridge ( Edge ) Hand .
The Animal Styles consists of the same thing Choy Ga - Lee Ga - Mote- Fut and Hung Ga Styles also.
This could have all been passed on if Seming Ma had not dropped the ball in 1987. As a result it is 50 % gone thanks to him.

it is sad to see Ark Wong's combat and fighting methods die , He explained Kung Fu consisted of
Combat and self-defense
Acting
Heath
Combat and self-defense has been lost.
Acting ( forms ) is what is left , and most of his original Forms are long gone or have been modified.
Health has also changed - the original Tai Chi Form is long gone , Ark Wong didn't teach it anyway but his method ( Qigong ) is nearly extinct.

As we enter into the New year ( 2019) I flash back to the early days of Kung Fu with Sifu Ark Wong. That was 58 years ago. He was a amazing person , quite the opposite of what many people realize today. He welcomed us ( all races) into his kingdom and enjoyed learning about life in the USA and what we Americans stand for .
Long gone is the self-defense and combat of the old days of the past , he was one of the last to teach this, it kind of reminds me of the movie " The Last Samurai ".
The Kung Fu we see today is acting , its been around since the beginning. The Chinese Opera etc. It is enjoyable to watch as entertainment has always and still is enjoyed.

Acting with Gymnastics that is todays definition of Kung Fu. Kung Fu started changing along with Karate years ago , when safety gear started being used during free style and all fighting., it was a sign that the fighting was being taken out of Martial Arts and acting ( forms) were going to be predominate.

MARTIAL ART TOURNAMENT
Have not changed --- if your in the click ( the tournament promotors- judges-etc. ) you will have a good change of winning , in my opinion there has never been a fair tournament and never will be one. Sifu did not believe in them , he was 100% against them. If you do enter , enter the fighting ( sparring) only in order to text your skill. He was correct , but after contact was eliminated and safety gear required it became useless.

As we enter the year 2020 I notice a change in all Martial Arts, the young people today appear to be less interested in Martial Arts and that interest today has changed.
Kung Fu consists of thee things:
Self-defense heath acting
Today self-defense has dropped to the bottom acting is number 1 health is number 2
Acting has always been popular the Chinese Opera - New Years - movies etc. Today it still is and we find it in Movies, Celebrations, and tournaments. Sparring ( freestyle ) at tournaments is still around but it has changed dramatically fighter today face no test of skill as they are protected with modern gear.
Heath ( Tai Chi and Chi Gong) is gaining in popularity and rightfully so.

Back in the old days ( Martial arts concentrated ) on self-defense and fighting. Sifu Ark Wong said when they had a tournament in his days , everyone met in a field - full contact - many were carried out in stretchers , no one make a sound until the last man standing was applauded. We never wore protective gear in my days . When that gear came out , people were and still are wrapped up like mummies, that's when the self-defense tool a few steps backwards. Add the home boys ( gangs_ were using guns. Knife attacks still occur but no rapidly. Every thing I learned was center around self defense.
Our forms had meaning, application, and no gymnastics.
What made Ark Wong extra dangerous was his knowledge of the anatomy of the humane body , he was a Doctor , a internal medial specialist one touch and it was lights out , Dim Mak .
The good old days.

Sifu Ark Wong told me a few story's that I will pass on here. Soon after he met Chief Monk Pang , Pang took him into a room and told Sifu to watch and learn -- it was a lesson in internal strength - Monk Pang lit a candle, moved several feet from it, pointed his index finger at the candle, snapped his finger back and the candle split in half.
" Golly " Sifu said , " I tried to do that for weeks and couldn't do it" he went back and explained his disappointment to Monk Pang , and learned silk thread and an a not so well lighted room equal tricks of the trade LOL

Haha. Did Sifu Wong ever tell you what he learnt from which teacher? Highest Respects Chris Master Lam Ark Fun was his first teacher he was an older man ( and that was in 1906 or 1907) Fun was a village K/F Master , he taught Sifu his first basics , he taught him Boat Style K/F , Sifu had a extremely strong Horse stance and was powerful that came from Lam Ark Fun. Ho Yeng was his second teacher another village K/F Master , he was a younger man these two taught him well and they were combat specialist. Sifu was a strong fighter because of these 2 teachers. Sifu met Monk Pang while in college. He said he went to a roof top to practice and a couple of guys at the same college were their practicing their K/F they exchanged K/F together and became friends. These 2 guys were students of Monk Pang and they introduced Sifu to Monk Pang, they all liked each other and thus Monk Pang became Sifu's last teacher. Monk Pang took Sifu into more depth ( knowledge) of Fut Ga and the Butterfly Knifes. Pang also placed a great emphasis on the Dragon. I never asked Ark Wong a lot of questions as he didn't like it . The Chinese don't like to be asked about anything of their past, present, or future. They would speak more of themselves if it was voluntary. He was a wise man, we both learned a great deal from each other about our cultures.
